Shopping in London: Broadway Market

IMG_9289

IMG_9284

I finally paid Broadway Market a long overdue visit recently to re-discover some old favourites (Violet has some of the best cupcakery in London), as well as stumble across some exciting new finds. Since we moved to South-East London it's a bigger effort to 'make the trip' to what was once my little local market. It's more of an event than just nipping out to stock up on veg (and uh, cake) for the week. Can't wait til they open up the new rail line next year...

But first, I need to indulge my Violet obsession with a pic of their incredible chocolate devil's food cupcake with marshmallow icing (no wonder this stall was one of the first things I blogged about when I first started Wee Birdy)...

And I loved the look of these apples sitting in the sun...

But it was Karin Andreasson's jewellery that caught my eye this time: a mapgie's nest of vintage-style hairpieces, pendants and jewels. She's a local East Londoner and I love how she's used old ballerina jewellery boxes and mannequin busts to display her wares. It all adds up to a rather charming little stall...

I really love the '20s-style single-feather hair pins embellished with antique lace and vintage diamantes, which are perfect for tucking into a bun or chignon for a special occasion. And if you like quirky pendants, keep an eye out for Karin's re-purposed watch-faces, miniature hand-mirrors, keys and crocheted-edged charms.

(You can also pick up some of Karin's gorgeous pieces online from Wee Birdy sponsor Cerise.)

Tweet tweet! I love reading all your comments - thanks so much for stopping by.

Ah this is lovely....makes me a 'tiny' bit nostalgic for Hackney, but the moment will pass I'm sure.

I loved that apple/tomato stall. Always had to drag back bottles of their juice!

Oh I want to go. Sigh. My friend lives right next door and whenever I stay I am jealous. I love living souf too though. What is about markets- they just have that *I need it factor* that shops don't.

I may be in Hackney on Saturday now...

Agree about the pins- beautiful

That jewellry stall looks amazing. I need to make a trip down south. Fast.

Lovely pictures (and cupcakes).

you live in south east london!....why don't you do a nice feature about it. would love to hear about it. thanks

I think that the 20's style headbands are going to come back in force next year. Events like the Last Tuesday Society are ensuring that everyone has one tucked away somewhere!

I never visited this market when I lived in London, is it new? It looks amazing, great stuff. I will put it on my list for next time, thanks

I absolutely love tea and cupcakes. I wish I still lived in London to be able to visit this market. I also like to collect interesting cake papers to keep in my kitchen cupboard ready for cake making. I found some fantastic square ones the other day.

Man, the cupcakes on the first picture looks delicious!

those hairpins are to die for ! So beautiful !!
Those cupcakes look so good ! They even look to lovely to eat !!

Those cupcakes look AMAZINGLY good - love the sound of the marshmallow. Never been to Broadway market - looks like I have been missing out.

Oh, how lovely!! I must visit some time - those cupcakes look divine!

Those wonderful tiny silver balls atop the cupcakes are taking me back to happy childhood memories. Even though I can't properly place them!

You have completely inspired me to get my behind to the market.

Thanks for the post. The cupcakes look delicious and the jewellery intriguing. Sabine x

Those cupcakes look devine, if only I was in London on the weekends - this might call for a special trip. The jewellery is gorgeous too - love the legs necklace!

Walk the Sand: so true, I rarely post about things closer to home. I guess I've spent the last 12 months railing against it (we got mugged earlier this year) and I always thought we'd move again. And I never really *shop* around here, and this is primarily a shopping blog. Hmmm...

Cate: Broadway Market is actually one of London's oldest markets, but has become increasingly gentrified over the past few years. And it's one of my favourite spots in London.

Let me know if you see any 20's inspired tiaras please? ;-)
Wish I could have one of those cupcakes now btw! xxx

Great post cupcakes divine
