Goodbye London, hello Sydney

IMG_6376

Well, it’s an end of an era here at Wee Birdy. I’ve decided to move back to my hometown of Sydney. It was a heart-wrenching decision that I've agonised over for months, and although I'll never tire of this wonderful old town (never, Dr Johnson!), things seem to have come to their natural end. For the time being, anyway.

So what will this mean for Wee Birdy? Well, not much will change as I have been very busy squirreling away loads of London shop reviews, which I’ll be posting about once I’m settled in Sydney. And eventually I’ll introduce you to some of my favourite Australian shops. I guess Wee Birdy will take on a more global feel in time, and I'm already planning regular trips back to London to 'top up' my posts.

In the meantime, I will be posting “The Best Of’ London shop reviews over the next two weeks, before normal blogging will resume.

But it's goodbye London for now…
Goodbye riding in the front seat up the top of a double-decker bus
Goodbye getting mugged
Goodbye marvellous weekend newspapers
Goodbye hot air vents on the buses in summer (oh why oh why?)
Goodbye Tatty Devine, Rob Ryan and Alex Monroe
Goodbye 2am bagels on Brick Lane
Goodbye foxes crying like tortured banshees in the middle of the night
Goodbye proper afternoon tea with clotted cream
Goodbye Sherlock Holmes tiles at Baker Street tube station
Goodbye eternal queues at Monmouth coffee
Goodbye University Challenge and the ever-excitable voice of Roger Tilling
Goodbye perfectly formed snowflakes that sparkle in the weak morning sun
Goodbye Central Line, you served me well (most of the time)
Goodbye narrow lanes and hedgerows in the countryside
Goodbye Sunday roast dinners with Yorkshire pudding
Goodbye sugar mice and Parma Violets
Goodbye brilliant, wonderful Guardian mini mag supplements
Goodbye wild buttercups growing outside Greenwich park
Goodbye picking over 400-year old clay pipes on the banks of the Thames
Goodbye incredible museums and art galleries
Goodbye Time Out (and thanks for employing me in the middle of a recession!)
Goodbye lazy Saturday mornings trawling the stalls at Broadway Market
Goodbye skidding on icy streets because the council couldn’t be arsed to grit
Goodbye daily repeats of Friends on E4
Goodbye 'three for a fiver' bunches of flowers at Columbia Road
Goodbye dusty old bookshops (and rather odd owners) on Charing Cross Road
Goodbye 4pm darkness in December
Goodbye glorious Knickerbocker Glory at Fortnum & Mason
Goodbye pretty little blue tits in the tree outside my window
Goodbye limescale sludge in my tea
Goodbye sitting in the bar at the Tate Modern watching the sun go down
Goodbye walking up Piccadilly in the rain
Goodbye having ice-creams in Hyde Park on green and white striped deckchairs
Goodbye robins in the snow
Goodbye peat bog man at the British Museum
Goodbye getting lost again in Soho
Goodbye ring-necked parakeets in Greenwich park
Goodbye car boot sales
Goodbye Tunnock's Teacakes, how do they make your marshmallow so soft?
Goodbye some of the shittiest customer service I’ve ever experienced in my life
Goodbye installations in the Turbine Hall
Goodbye Waitrose and M&S ready-made meals
Goodbye crazy tile mosaics at Tottenham Court Road tube
Goodbye Selfridges’ Christmas windows
Goodbye people who don’t move down into the carriage
Goodbye geese and squirrels in St James’s Park
Goodbye London sales
Goodbye coots on Regent’s Canal
Goodbye Charbonnel et Walker powdery-pink champagne chocolates
Goodbye shiny mahogany conkers in autumn
Goodbye pink petal showers in spring
Goodbye cheese, coffee and cake at Borough Market
Goodbye grey squirrels – I know I'm not meant to like you, but I do
Goodbye South Eastern trains coming to a standstill within inches of the platform at London Bridge
Goodbye to all my wonderful, wonderful London and UK friends, hope you all keep reading… maybe I can treat you to a coffee in Sydney some time?

Goodbye London, thanks for having me. It’s been a treat and I'll miss you terribly (sob!).

Oh no! I feel as though I’ve only just ‘met’ you and now you’re leaving!
I’m really, really glad to hear that Wee Birdy will continue, as it’s absolutely brilliant and an inspiration! It’ll be great to read some Australian birdy stuff as well, though. (I don’t think this bird will ever make that 24 hour flight!)
Best of luck with your decision.

Oh, Top Bird, call me an emotional fool but reading your “Good Byes” made my eyes well. Bah!
I’ve not experienced London but I can just imagine missing all of that.
But UK’s loss is my gain. Woohoo! See you in Sydney soon, my oldest bloggy pal! xx

Oh god! I have a tear in my eye, i remember leaving London the first time, I’m afraid i was back within 3 months, it just lived in me. Say hello to calling ABC – BBC, to doonas being duvets, wondering why you can’t find your fav biscuit on the supermarket shelf, that the Aussie accent is really strong, thinking Australian traffic is light, oh i could go on and on…
It’s 4 years now I have been back in Oz from the UK and I miss it everyday. Your blog let me feel like I was back. Have a great trip home and I look forward to reading about my old stomping ground Sydney now1 Best of luck!

So sorry to hear you’re going, Top Bird. Your posts are always so informative, helpful and well-photographed — I must admit to being selfishly pleased that there are still a couple of London posts up your sleeve! I am also pleased we got to meet a couple of times and I hope in the future we may do so again. Good luck with the move to Sydney and I wish you the very best for your life there!

Wow, I feel like this is the end of an era!! I am also an antipodean living in London, and I have really loved your site!!
But I totally understand the pull of home, family, old friends, sandy beaches, sunshine, eskies, swimming pools and needing air conditioning.
Thanks for all the great times in London!!

  • http://www.gemmajones.net Gemma Jones

    Oh Birdy!
Such exciting times! So many brand new hellos to be had in Oz and so many reunions too! And it’s true, you’re a global birdy at heart – I for one can’t wait to watch WB take on the world! Yay!
PS: I hope that this “auspicious day” for you was also very happy in a cake-eating kinda way!!!!

  • http://abbyjodennis.blogspot.com abby

Argh! I’m happy for you, but oh so sad. Also, I’m going to have to print this post off as it’s a lovely trip to londontown and will help perk me up when i’m feeling low. there are loads of wonderful things here.

You know what, I guessed you were leaving! I haven’t been hanging around wee birdy as much as usual lately (it’s a time issue), and today I had a bit of a catch up read. I saw that you’d been doing lots of great trips lately and thought to myself ‘this looks like the cramming we Aussies do before we leave London!’.
Fly safely Top Bird, and I’ll look forward to fab local content when you’re back home.

  • mel

Oh, it’s so sad to leave good ol’ London and I just loved your list. Ahhh…so many fond memories of London. But so excited you’re coming back home to Sydney. Us Aussie birdie fans need someone fab to guide us from store to store!
P.s My in-laws are going to be glad I’ll stop asking them to send me things I’ve seen on WB!

  • http://conversationpieces.co.uk/ Zoe, Conversation Pieces

Aww your goodbye list is brilliant… I’ve never lived in London but I’m down at least a couple of times a year and I can so identify with almost all your list!
Best of luck with the move – in some ways it seems v sad but in other ways brill as then I’ll get to know more about Australia (me and the OH are considering going there next year as part of our honeymoon so we’ll need your tips!)
Anyway, looking forward to the next phase of wee birdy :) (And surely saying goodbye to dark at 4pm is a good thing?!) xx

awww…sad to see you go…but looking forward to lots of juicy posts from over the other side.
after being here my entire adult life i am thinking i’ve almost had enough of London myself (there are just toooo many people, and not enough trains, and we need to make room for the new people coming in!) and a house by the seaside is tempting me…but the list is making me have second thoughts!
    good luck!

I hated living in London yet I still feel really emotional at your list. London’s loss will be Sydney’s gain and I can’t wait to read all about your finds in Oz. And, by the way, Roger Tilling is the loveliest man you could hope to meet (I used to work on University Challenge). Bon voyage!

I left London 8 years ago for Vancouver and I know being from London originally doesn’t help, but I miss dear old London badly. My friends from there tell me it’s not the same, but the things you have said above really tear at my heart strings.

It’s so hard when you have one foot each in two different places and tough to make a decision. When we’re in London we miss Australia and vice versa. The best of luck with your decision exciting times! I’m so glad your blog will be continuing because I love it! I’m looking forward to your continued inspiration from Sydney, and will be no doubt making a big list of all the places to visit when we are next back.

Safe travels – will be back to read about your Sydney favs.

Noooooooooooo! I’m a born and bred London girl who has learnt more about the city through your reviews than through actually living here! Spent seven joyous months in Sydney though and can totally see why you’d head back there. We will miss you, but hopefully Aus will realise our loss is their gain xxx

Well, I am a newbie here at Wee Bird but thoroughly smitten from the get go (yeah, I can be something of an Anglophile). But, hey, birds fly don’t they? So while it is clear you’ll be missed in this London nest you’ve built, I, for one, will look forward to your splendid sensibilities shining a light on Sydney!
Thanks for all the swooning and inspiration!

  • http://www.angeleden.co.uk Angel Eden

It is always difficult to make a decision to move especially if you still like the place you are living. However these days the world does seem a much smaller place and of course with blogs, you could be anywhere.
I hope everything goes smoothly in the move and wish you all the best.

  • http://skirmishofwit.typepad.com/skirmish_of_wit/ skirmishofwit

Oh, I am so sad to hear you are leaving London – I have loved all your posts about the city – but I am also very excited for you to be starting out on a new chapter of your life. I wish you the very best and look forward to hearing about your Sydney adventures.

  • Shortncurly

I’m another blubberer over your last post – Thank you for covering my hometown with such style over these past years. You’ve been a fabulous read. I must admit though that I can’t wait to read about your new finds and discoveries in Sydney as I lived there for a year and miss the easy going charm of the design scene there.
So i hope that you enjoy swapping the tea and cakes of Columbia Rd market for the Snags and Ginger beer at Paddo Market! All the best and safe travels!

  • Jennifer

This sounds rather as though I’m glad you’re leaving, but I think that this might be one of my favourite posts from Wee Birdy! London sounds so wonderful that I’m starting to wonder why I want to leave myself!

  • http://www.matouenpeluche.typepad.com Sam

Awww! Your post makes me feel a little melancholy…All those sweet goodbyes. Well, on the bright side Sydney is pretty wonderful – not in the way London is but in a different way as I’m sure you already know. Welcome home!

Oh Top Birdy, what a lovely, poignant post.
When I first moved to the UK from Australia a year ago, your site was the first I visited and ever since it has been one of my daily must haves – helping me feel at home, giving my ideas on where to visit for treasures and experiences, and your adorable birdy finds (I too have a thing for birds).
I’ve just started a blog and hope to pick up a little where you left off (not that I would ever dare to copy you! You’re irreplaceable), but I do look forward to reading about all your new adventures.
    Best of luck!
